katazome workshop, 8th December 2019

I'm running the following workshop at Craft Central, London E14 3AE:

Japanese katazome (or stencil dyeing) is a centuries-old method of printing on cloth using paper stencils and a rice paste resist in combination with indigo. In this one-day workshop we’ll look briefly at the history of this art, before using traditional Japanese stencil pa

per to hand cut stencils. We’ll then use them to print a repeat pattern onto silk or cotton using a traditional rice paste resist. When the resist is dry, we’ll use indigo to dye the fabric, and then wash out the paste to reveal a white pattern on an indigo ground. Participants will take home their stencils, fabric samples and a comprehensive resource list that will enable them to explore this beautiful textile print medium independently.

COST: The cost of the workshop is £95, which includes all materials and a light lunch. There is a maximum of ten places.

TIME: 10am to 5pm, Sunday 8th December

LOCATION: Craft Central, The Forge, 397-411 Westferry Road, Isle of Dogs, London E14 3AE

Nearby DLR stations Mudchute and Island Gardens, both minutes from Canary Wharf (Jubilee Line)
